Dear Class:

Please finish defining the following terms and save them on your server account with the file name “last name second vocabulary”. Please add the next five and define them as well.

1. Hertz
2. Input
3. Kilo
4. Mega
5. Output
6. URL
7. HTTP
8. ISP
9. USB
10. Firewire
11. ROM
12. Software
13. Systems Software
14. Application Software
15. Buffer

Questions that will come up:

Students: “Mr. Green-Hite, now that I know how to find my information from going from general to specific through searches, how do I evaluate that information, how do I cite that information, and how do I make sure I don’t run foul of plagiarism?” Mr. Green-Hite replies, “Kids, those are all good questions and one that we will be looking at beginning today and continuing on into next week!”

Find two sites that are more "subject to interpretation" and evaluate them using the evaluation sheet attached. I will go over what is generally on a web page and how to look for it.
See attached for the “Evaluating Internet Resources”. You will be doing two of them evaluating two web pages of your choice. This time, please print them out and hand them in!

Citations for Web Pages. You will be going to the David Douglas High School Web Site and citing two web pages on the same word document. Go to the official high school web site at http://ddhs.ddouglas.k12.or.us/ and go to the media and library button. From there, go to the OSLIS button (We did this together when we did our searches). Go to the APA Citation link on the right side. You will use the “Internet, Web Page – Personal” for your personal one and then you have to figure out which citation you use for the two web sites I have provided. One will be for www.portlandmaps.com and one will be for file:///E:/Qualitative%20Class%20GFU/FullText(2).html and the final citation will be of your choice. When the citations are done, they will appear at the bottom. Copy and paste them in a blank document with the heading “Citations” with your name and class period at the bottom. This sheet will be printed and handed in!

Sincerely,
Mr. Green-Hite

We will have a discussion on these terms. These terms will be part of the vocabulary that you will have to know for a test. There will be 20 total words that you will have to define as well as the information from the timeline you will work on today.

The last assignment, which is a focus on “specific” items on the internet and “the lowest price” as search parameters, is meant to hone your skill even further.

The last of specifics for web searches will entail putting together the “Virtual Computer” (see below assignment; Should be finished today).

Class:

Please put together a “virtual” computer with the following configuration (you cannot have a pre-made computer; in other words, you cannot have Dell Computer put it together!)

You can get into groups of no more than 2 people per group

Find the following (each separately):

1 – 4 gig Ram
1 - 2.8 GHz Pentium dual core (or equivalent)
1 - DVD+/- RW double side Burner
1 – Blue Ray player
1 - TV Tuner Card
1 - Video Card with at least 512 MB DDR
1 - 22 inch flat panel Monitor HD (minimum measurement)
1 – Set of surround sound speakers for computer
1 – Case with motherboard that supports above
1 - 10/100 wireless network adapter
1 - Optical Mouse
1 - Wireless Keyboard
1 - Hard Drive with 500 GB; with at least 7200 rpm rated and 16 MB Buffer
1 - LaserJet Printer with color
1 – Wireless N card for internet

Please put cost together in a list for each and the total for all of it; copy the ad (using the print screen function) that you found it in, the price, and the web page address. The person with the lowest total price will win…extra credit!!!!!!

Finish the list the Internet PowerPoint. The end of the PowerPoint asks you to search for specific items; please find, copy the site you got it from, and e-mail me the results by 10:00!

Work on the bridges when done. This is the file under start, west point bridge building, and .exe file.

Sincerely,
Mr. Green-Hite

18. Disk
19. Giga
20. Hardware

We will have a discussion on these terms. These terms will be part of the vocabulary that you will have to know for a test. There will be 20 total words that you will have to define.

Quiz on the above 20 words will take place on Thursday, September 23rd, in the year of 2010.

Furthermore, the first 13 words will be incorporated into a “virtual computer” that you will have to use the internet to search for each item, price them, and give me a final tally of what you “spent” on the hardware.

You should have sent me a copy of your finished work of the 'Online Research Planner' to me after you did a “save as”, rename with your last name and worksheet and e-mail it to me at jgreenhite@gmail.com. If I do not receive it today, it will be late and I will dock it 30% on the grade!

I want to take baby steps in research and then build to the actual research on the item you chose to research.

I talked of three types of "engines" to search with. I want you to use all three and report back to me your findings using my "surfing" sheet.

With that in mind, we will look at the Internet PowerPoint. The end of the PowerPoint asks you to search for specific items; please find, copy the site you got it from, and e-mail me the results!

The last of specifics for web searches will entail putting together the “Virtual Computer” (see attached assignment; probably will not have time for).

Sincerely,
Mr. Green-Hite

Dear Class:

I hope you enjoyed the weekend!

Always start the class by doing two things: Go to my web page and then to my blog with this information. Secondly, please open up your student account on the DDHS server. If you do not remember, go back to my web page and in the side bar, just down from the link to this blog, there is an area that shows you how to connect to the server. Make sure you have this open so you can save the below vocabulary to it.
(Where to save your documents: Your documents will be saved on the fileserver for this school. That fileserver can be logged on by going to “Start”, right click on “My Computer” and click on “Map Network Drive”. You will enter in “Z:” For your address, it will be \\10.52.254.110\ and then the last two number of the year you will graduate and then your last name first, first name last (I would suggest right clicking after selecting your year and name and “copy” it. When you enter this address, it will then prompt you for your id and password. Paste in the above and then enter your student number for the password.)
Create a folder entitled "Information Technology"

I want to make sure you have a gmail e-mail account. Even if you already have one, I want a new one. You are required to have a gmail account since we will be looking at how to use gmail documents. So, you need to create an account using ddhs...then your name.gmail.com. For example, if your name was Joe Brown, your account would be ddhsjoebrown@gmail.com.

After everyone has finished creating a gmail account, we will look at PowerPoint on Into to IT. Info Tech PP link

We will look at attaching files. When to ZIP a file and when not to and about compression and how to log on the server.

Rather than a link, I want you to copy the below website and then paste it into we web address box. To do so, triple click the line or select manually, hit control+C to copy and then create a new internet window and paste it in, either by holding the control key and pressing V or right clicking the mouse and click "paste".
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/file-compression.htm

This is an exercise and can be used to determine your grade by awarding points to those with it on their screens!

Now, please open up a word file. Put your name, the class, and the class period in the upper left hand margin. Please define the following terms and save them on your server account with the file name “last name first vocabulary”.

RAM
CPU
DVD burner
TV tuner card
Video Card

Make a folder entitled “Vocabulary”.

We will have a discussion on these terms. These terms will be part of the vocabulary that you will have to know for a test. There will be 20 total words that you will have to define as well as the information from the timeline you will work on today.

Furthermore, the first 13 words will be incorporated into a “virtual computer” that you will have to use the internet to search for each item, price them, and give me a final tally of what you “spent” on the hardware.

Introduce students to parameters of a search.

http://hs.ddouglas.k12.or.us/ Go to the high school web site and then to the library link. We will be looking at the searches there.

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Today we will be looking at what we will be doing in information technology.

Today we will be talking about what is required in the class and what I expect from you. The general rules are: No gum, no food, no hats and no drink. This policy is strictly enforced! A warning will be given in the first instance. After that, I will make a notation in the grade book of non-participation and deduct points.

When you come into class, please turn on the computers. To find out what we are covering during any given class day, I should have it posted on the blog.

Assignments Due: If you are absent, please look at the day in which you were absent to see what you missed. You have the number of days you were absent to make up missed work unless you get special permission to do otherwise.

How to access today’s assignment: Go to “http://ddhsinfotech.blogspot.com” or follow the link from the David Douglas High School Web Page under "e-portfolios".

Printers: Be familiar where your computer prints to. Do not print more than once! Any printing other than for school or this class will cost 25 cents per page.

Where to save your documents: Your documents will be saved on the fileserver for this school. That fileserver can be logged on by going to “Start”, right click on “My Computer” and click on “Map Network Drive”. You will enter in “Z:” (unless you are an upperclassman and use the “H:” drive instead). For your address, it will be \\10.52.254.110\ and then the last two number of the year you will graduate and then your last name first, first name last (I would suggest right clicking after selecting your year and name and “copy” it. When you enter this address, it will then prompt you for your id and password. Paste in the above and then enter your student number for the password. We will be doing that today in class

Where to send your completed documents: Final documents will be submitted to my e-mail at jgreenhite@gmail.com or to your shared documents on your e-portfolios. Your first assignment will be to create a yahoo account with your first initial, last name and then DDHS@gmail.com.

The class will begin by investigating what is in a computer and how it works using terminology. We will begin with what is in a computer in general. As we are doing that, we will look at the internet . We will then proceed with the basic aspects computer architecture and IT careers, programming, operating systems applications, application architecture, Internet and emerging technologies. Info Tech PP link

First, I would like you to answer the questions on the blog and submit them.

You are required to have a gmail account since we will be looking at how to use gmail documents. So, you need to create an account using ddhs...then your name.gmail.com.

Please save your answers on the server. If you cannot, please hand in the completed information above into the tray with the class period.

I want you to go to Class Survey Link

Rest of the class period familiarize with the computers in front of students.
